GTA 6 Age Rating: ESRB M 17+ and What It Means

✅ CONFIRMEDLast updated:
Neon title card: GTA 6 age rating – ESRB M 17+ explained

Quick answer

GTA 6 is rated M for Mature (17+) by the ESRB in North America. Rockstar's official site lists the descriptors: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content and Use of Drugs and Alcohol, plus In-Game Purchases. In Europe, PEGI 18 has been reported but the listing was briefly pulled.

Every GTA has been an adults-only game, and GTA 6 is no different. Here's the official rating, what each label actually means, and what's still only reported.

GTA 6 ESRB rating: M for Mature 17+

In North America, GTA 6 carries the ESRB M (Mature 17+) rating. Rockstar's official GTA VI website now shows the full list of content descriptors (the badge replaced "Rating Pending" on store pages on October 1, 2026).

Every ESRB content descriptor, explained

Descriptor What it means in plain English
Blood and Gore Realistic blood and injuries
Intense Violence Graphic fighting, shooting and killing
Mature Humor Crude, adult jokes and situations
Nudity Nudity is shown
Strong Language Frequent swearing and offensive language
Strong Sexual Content Sexual scenes and references
Use of Drugs and Alcohol Characters use drugs and drink

Interactive element: In-Game Purchases. That's a disclosure that you can buy something with real money inside the game. The known example is the Ultimate Edition upgrade (Standard owners can upgrade later). Take-Two's CEO said there's no recurrent consumer spending planned at launch.

What's missing: "Users Interact"

GTA 5's rating included "Users Interact" because of GTA Online. GTA 6's rating doesn't. That fits what Take-Two confirmed: GTA 6 launches as a single-player game. Full story: Does GTA 6 have online at launch?

GTA 6 PEGI rating (Europe): 18, reported

In early October 2026, Forbes reported that the PEGI website briefly listed GTA 6 as PEGI 18, with descriptors for violence (including decapitation), drug use, sex, nudity and strong language, before the detailed page was removed.

Because the listing isn't live right now, we label it as reported, not confirmed. We'll update this page the moment PEGI republishes it.

How GTA 6 compares to GTA 5

GTA 5 GTA 6
ESRB M (Mature 17+) M (Mature 17+)
PEGI 18 18 (reported)
Online at launch Yes (GTA Online, Oct 2013) No, single-player
"Users Interact" Yes No

Same age bracket, same kind of content. If you know GTA 5, you know what you're getting.

What the rating means for parents

A rating is guidance. In most of the US no law stops a younger teen from playing, but stores usually ask for ID when selling M-rated games. In many European countries PEGI 18 is enforced at the till.

If you're deciding for your kid, our GTA 6 parents guide covers the content honestly, the parental controls on PS5 and Xbox, and the scams that target young players.

Key takeaways

  • ESRB: M (Mature 17+), ✅ confirmed on Rockstar's official site.

FAQ

+What is GTA 6 rated?

M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB. The content descriptors are shown on Rockstar's official GTA VI website.

+Is GTA 6 rated 18 in Europe?

PEGI 18 has been reported. Forbes saw the PEGI listing in early October 2026 before the detailed page was taken down, so treat it as reported until the listing is back.

+Can a 13-year-old play GTA 6?

The rating says 17+. Ratings are guidance, not law in most US states, so it's the parent's call, but the content is clearly made for adults.

+Does GTA 6 have in-game purchases?

The ESRB lists 'In-Game Purchases'. The known paid add-on is the Ultimate Edition upgrade. Take-Two has said no recurrent spending is planned at launch.

+Why does the GTA 6 rating not say 'Users Interact'?

Because GTA 6 launches as a single-player game. 'Users Interact' is used for games with online chat or interaction, which GTA 6 won't have at launch.
