GTA 6 Beginner Tips: What to Do First (Before & After Launch)

≈ ESTIMATELast updated:
Neon title card: GTA 6 beginner tips, what to do first

Quick answer

Nobody outside Rockstar has played GTA 6 yet, so real beginner tips start on November 19, 2026. What you can do now: learn the mechanics shown in official footage (switching between Lucia and Jason, a six-star wanted level, the Criminal Profile, police tracking your clothes and car) and prep your console with pre-load and free storage.

Nobody outside Rockstar has played GTA 6, so every "pro tip" floating around right now is a guess. This page does two things instead:

  1. Explains the mechanics shown in official Rockstar footage, so nothing surprises you on day one.
  2. Gives you prep tips you can actually use now, plus GTA 5 lessons clearly labeled as GTA 5.

Real tested tips arrive after launch. Same page.

The mechanics you should know before day one

All of these come from official footage (trailers and the Netflix Extended Look) as reported by GameSpot and PC Gamer. Full breakdown: what can you do in GTA 6.

Mechanic What was shown Why it matters for beginners
✅ Switch Lucia / Jason Swap characters, even mid-mission and in car chases Some fights are easier from the other seat
✅ Six-star wanted level Wanted goes to six stars, one more than GTA 5 The ceiling for police heat is higher
✅ Criminal Profile Tracks how you play over time, doesn't reset like stars Reckless violence may follow you
✅ Police identification Icons that appear to track clothes, face/hair and car Changing outfit or car should help you lose heat
✅ Key cloner Older cars are easy to steal, newer ones need a key cloner Don't expect to grab any supercar off the street
✅ Fuel and stamina Cars have gas meters; a stamina meter appeared in a carjacking Watch your tank on long drives
✅ Weapons in public Bystanders can call the cops if you pull a gun Keep it holstered in busy streets
✅ Solo jobs Some jobs are for one character only You won't always have backup

A caveat: PC Gamer's coverage describes the three police icons and says they likely stand for clothing, face/hair and car. That's the best read so far, not an official explanation from Rockstar.

Prep tips you can use right now

1. Pre-load and storage

2. Know your launch time

The unlock time per region isn't official yet. Check release date & time and the countdown before you plan a late night.

3. Set expectations on performance

Rockstar North reportedly said GTA 6 runs at 30fps on consoles at launch, per TechRadar. If you're hunting for a 60fps mode, read GTA 6 60fps first.

4. Get your controller ready

On PS5, Rockstar says GTA 6 uses DualSense haptics, adaptive triggers, the controller speaker and Tempest 3D Audio. Charge it, update firmware, done.

5. Lock down spoilers

GTA 6 is a story game with no online mode at launch (details). That makes spoilers the biggest risk on day one. Mute words like "GTA 6 ending" and "GTA 6 spoilers" on X, TikTok and Instagram before November 19.

6. Ignore "early tips" and downloads

No one can have tested GTA 6 tips, cheats or money tricks yet. Downloads or sites promising early access, mods or money are scams: GTA 6 fake codes & scams.

GTA 5 lessons (labeled: how GTA 5 worked)

These are habits from GTA 5 story mode. They might carry over, they might not. We'll confirm or bin each one after launch.

  • GTA 5: save in more than one slot. GTA 5 let you keep multiple manual saves. Keeping a backup slot protected players from bad decisions and failed experiments.
  • GTA 5: don't blow your cash early. In GTA 5 the biggest payouts came late, from heists and Lester's assassination missions tied to the stock market. More: how to make money fast in GTA 6.
  • GTA 5: cheats switched off trophies. Using a cheat in GTA 5 disabled trophies and achievements while it was active. Details: do cheats disable trophies in GTA 6?
  • GTA 5: some trophies were missable. Trophy guides list several GTA 5 trophies tied to story choices or side missions. Keep an eye on our GTA 6 trophies & achievements list.

⏳ Awaiting launch: what we'll add on November 19

This is a launch shell. From November 19 we'll test it on our own playthrough and update this page with:

  • What to do in your first hour (and what to skip)
  • How the six-star wanted level and police identification actually work in play
  • Whether the Criminal Profile changes missions, prices or endings
  • Best early money and early vehicles, tested, not guessed
  • Settings worth changing on PS5 and Xbox

Get notified when this is verified: grab the free Day-1 Checklist below.

Our take: if you only do two things before launch, pre-load and mute spoiler keywords. Everything else you'll learn faster by playing than by reading guesses online.

FAQ

+What should I do first in GTA 6?

Before launch: pre-load from November 12, clear storage and avoid spoilers. After launch, our tested first-hour tips go on this page. Anything 'tested' you see online before November 19 is guesswork.

+Can you switch characters in GTA 6?

Yes. The Netflix Extended Look showed switching between Jason and Lucia, even mid-mission and during car chases.

+How does the wanted level work in GTA 6?

It goes up to six stars, one more than GTA 5. Coverage of the Extended Look says police identify you through icons that appear to track clothes, face/hair and car, so changing outfit or ditching a car should matter.

+What is the Criminal Profile in GTA 6?

A system that tracks how you play over time, such as unnecessary violence in missions. Unlike wanted stars, it doesn't reset. GameSpot and IGN compared it to Red Dead Redemption 2's Honor system.

+Do GTA 5 tips work in GTA 6?

Some might, but Rockstar hasn't confirmed it. We label GTA 5 habits as GTA 5 habits on this page until we've tested them in GTA 6.
